Smothered Hamburger Steak with Onions and Gravy

Smothered Hamburger Steak with Onions and Gravy

Step 1: Prepare the Hamburger Steaks

  1. In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, minced onion, beef base, and black pepper.
  2. Tear the bread into large pieces and add them to the bowl. Let the bread soak for a few seconds to absorb the liquid.
  3. Add the ground beef to the bowl and mix everything together until well combined.
  4. Form the mixture into 8 patties of equal size.

Step 2: Cook the Patties

  1. Heat a large, heavy skillet (cast iron works great) over medium-high heat.
  2. Fry the patties for about 8 minutes per side, or until they are browned and cooked through (no longer pink in the center).
  3. Remove the patties from the skillet and set them aside.

Step 3: Make the Gravy

  1. Drain any excess grease from the skillet, leaving just a little for flavor.
  2. In the same skillet, whisk together the cream of mushroom soup, water, and Worcestershire sauce until smooth.
  3. Return the patties to the skillet, spooning the gravy over them to coat evenly.
  4. Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce the heat to a simmer.
  5. Cook for about 20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the gravy thickens and the flavors meld together.

Serving Suggestions:
