Step 1: Prepare the Hamburger Steaks
- In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, minced onion, beef base, and black pepper.
- Tear the bread into large pieces and add them to the bowl. Let the bread soak for a few seconds to absorb the liquid.
- Add the ground beef to the bowl and mix everything together until well combined.
- Form the mixture into 8 patties of equal size.
Step 2: Cook the Patties
- Heat a large, heavy skillet (cast iron works great) over medium-high heat.
- Fry the patties for about 8 minutes per side, or until they are browned and cooked through (no longer pink in the center).
- Remove the patties from the skillet and set them aside.
Step 3: Make the Gravy
- Drain any excess grease from the skillet, leaving just a little for flavor.
- In the same skillet, whisk together the cream of mushroom soup, water, and Worcestershire sauce until smooth.
- Return the patties to the skillet, spooning the gravy over them to coat evenly.
- Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce the heat to a simmer.
- Cook for about 20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the gravy thickens and the flavors meld together.
Serving Suggestions:
- Serve the smothered hamburger steaks with mashed potatoes, rice, or buttered noodles to soak up the delicious gravy.
- Add a side of steamed vegetables or a green salad for a complete meal.
